Best Kept Secret - Steel Cut Oats!

One of my favorite breakfast foods has always been hot oatmeal, especially on these cold mornings. My sweet Lacey, a 10 year old Australian Shepherd, and I come out into the kitchen, I turn on the heater, and get breakfast started. For years, I had Quaker Oats - Old Fashioned hot oatmeal and loved it. Then one day, someone asked me if I had tried "steel cut oats". I thought I had because I didn't buy the "quick" oatmeal! Well... was I wrong! I went looking for steel cut oats, also known as Irish oats, or pinhead oats. I looked at my local market, to no avail. Then I went to Trader Joe's and found it in the tubs. I have since found steel cut oats at Baron's in their tubs and even Ralph's packaged under the label "Bob's Red Mill".

It is not like any oatmeal you have ever tried. The steel cut oats are so full of nutty, oat flavor and the texture is creamy yet chewy and delicious! Once I tried them, I have never gone back to regular, rolled oats. My favorite way to serve them is with a tablespoon of light, fruit jam on top. Give them a try and I wish you many cozy mornings of enjoyment!

Steel Cut Oats

  • Servings: 4
  • Prep Time: 25 min.
  • Cook Time: 10-20 min.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup steel cut oats

Directions

  • Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add 1/4 tsp salt and 1 cup steel cut oats. Reduce heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook for 20 (creamy) min. Stir every few min. Remove from heat and let stand for two min. Serve and enjoy!

These oats can be stored in a plastic container in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 days and then just put one serving in a bowl and microwave for about 1 1/2 or 2 min. Fresh fruit such as a cut up banana or sliced strawberries is excellent too. Of course any of your favorite fresh fruits would be yummy cut up on top. And cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkled on top is great also. So many choices, try them all!
